Can you be a Christian in digital marketing?

Digital marketing, just like any other career, has industry qualifications that go past fundamental marketing strategies and creative skills.

If you are thinking about beginning a career in the digital marketing arena, learning the skills needed and what digital marketers do is an excellent place to start.

What does a digital marketer do?

Digital marketers are responsible for handling digital channels to produce leads and build brand recognition. The most popular or well know digital media are: Websites, Social Media, Search Engine, Email, and Online Advertising.

In addition to having a good general understanding of how these channels work to create more visibility for an organization – you will need to use analytics to measure results and find ways to improve the campaign’s effectiveness.

Just like other career fields, the question is often asked:

Can you be a Christian in digital marketing?

Answer: Of course. There is nothing about digital marketing that goes against any of the beliefs of the Christian religion. Christians should consider any career in which they can bring glory to God and use their gifts and talents.

Many times, people will assume that Christians should work in the church or in a field that directly “helps or cares” for others like doctors, nurses, teachers, child care workers, social workers, law enforcement officers, or counselors.

How about careers that are not that obvious, like a lawyer, home builder, graphic designer, actor, or artist. We tend not to list these jobs among the most desirable work for Christians… but there is zero biblical about such a limiting position.

Christians can consider almost any career, including being a digital marketer. In Corinthians, Paul wrote, “Only let each person lead the life that the Lord has assigned to him, and to which God has called him. This is my rule in all the churches. . . . Each one should remain in the condition in which he was called. Were you a bondservant when called? Do not be concerned about it. (But if you can gain your freedom, avail yourself of the opportunity.) . . . So, brothers, in whatever condition each was called, there let him remain with God” (1 Corinthians 7:17, 20-21, 24).

Paul does not tell the believers to leave their current work and become missionaries or pastors. He tells them to remain where they are and serve God there.

In fact, Christians are the ideal employee – when they follow Colossians 3:23: “Whatever you do, work at it with all your heart, as working for the Lord, not for human masters” which means they are pursuing excellence in everything they do.

So, what do you think? Will you pursue a career in digital marketing?
